Prelude to the Skyway

So I have been hearing over and over about a particular restaurant out on Highway 26, en route to Mt. Hood. The Skyway. In fact, it’s been my mom that has been urging me to visit, claiming the ambiance, food, pricing and staff is second to none. Always on the hunt for a uniquely good place to eat and imbibe, well, I thought I’d do something fun with this one. So, first an initial prelude…ala my own mom, who has provided a review and pictures of this reportedly iconic and quirky place. For the second act, I will personally visit the Skyway and report back, surely validating all that I’ve heard as my mom (no bias, right??) is an excellent judge of great food and atmosphere. So, here goes part 1.

The Skyway

Self-described on their website as a, “Northwest-style BBQ shack in a forest setting with live music, a fire pit & outdoor picnic tables,” the Skyway is located at 71545 E US-26, Zigzag, OR 97049. For an interactive map click here.

Immediately through the front door the history and creativity really shows. I can’t comment yet on the smells…but as I note below, I have been told it’s “5-stars all the way around.” Image Courtesy: Becky Jahns

Here is a review and description from my mom who has batted 1000 in her restaurant recommendations to me over the years:

(The Skyway) is such a unique place. Right on HWY 26 but there’s a fence. You feel completely removed from the highway. A cozy indoor area with a fireplace along with a huge outdoor area (sic). Bands play every night in the summer. (It is) so peaceful and relaxing there... Besides, the menu. All the food is from scratch and 5 star. The service is amazing from the time you walk in until you leave. A very unusual bathroom! You are missing out if you haven’t gone yet!
The outdoor, walk-up bar looks like beach bar I went to in Puerto Vallarta. So cool. I am going soon to Skyway! Image Courtesy: Becky Jahns

Just one part of the vast, outdoor area. So many little quirks around here it seems… Image Courtesy: Becky Jahns

Aside from the staff and ambiance, this particular mac n’ cheese is what keeps my mom headed back up to the Skyway. Can’t wait to try! Image Courtesy: Becky Jahns
