Getting Social at the Box

Around since 2011, I was very surprised to recently learn about The Box Social, just one block north of Hopworks on North Williams. I mean how in the world did one of the coolest, most casual and original drinking parlors slip past my radar for nearly a decade? Granted it’s not a big place, probably sporting only 10 small tables and a bar, but wow did it leave an impression.

Let’s start with the staff and ambience. Number one, the box social is decorated perfectly. A very cool, Portland waterfront mural adorns one wall, complete with actual street lights built into the scene. A very friendly and knowledgeable staff mills about, taking care of your every need, but not in a way that isn’t welcome. It just seemed they knew exactly when to approach the table, and their knowledge of their excellent craft cocktails and wine list was impressive. No, the cocktail list is not a mile long as they have curated things down to absolute winners. Namely, the Ru Paul Sparkle Pony. This fruity cocktail was to die for. Vodka-based, with St. Germain, Aperol, grapefruit, rhubarb bitters and brut (flute), well, let’s just say that this drink was so good it reckons to put all prior vodka-based drinks to shame. If you are over 21, this tasty beverage should be on your PDX bucket list.

While we did not eat a full dinner at The Box Social, we did sample some happy hour food and were not disappointed. I specifically had the parmesan popcorn with black pepper, along with their maple glazed carrots, finding both items to be unique and quite tasty. We already had dinner reservations or we would have stayed for a longer haul at this great spot.

The crowd appeared to be a small but likely loyal, local crew. It wasn’t intimidating at all though, but rather very welcoming. No creaky saloon doors with a piano stopping…instead, just a nice, unpretentious atmosphere with a friendly, helpful staff. And while I don’t live in the direct area (hence me not hearing about this cool spot until recently), I could easily see why anyone nearby would make this their regular hang out. Maybe it will soon become one of yours?

The Box Social Important Details

We just walked into The Box Social on a Wednesday night. There were a couple of open tables, but otherwise it was pretty busy. I would imagine on the weekend it is permanently busy. There are outside tables, so things will expand a bit when the weather gets warmer. However, it’s not a big place so get there a bit early if you are looking to score a good spot to sit.
