A Coffee and the Feel of Travel

While walking through SE Portland the other day in search of a coffee and pastry I came across a small but thoroughly interesting coffee shop that made me feel like I was someplace else. Not that I was looking for an escape, but this place, it’s smells, decor and overall vibe further ignited my already strong desire to travel. And while perusing what was on offer, I truly felt like I could have been somewhere else like Bali, Sumatra or the like. Kopi Coffee House is the place, and its sub-title is “Small Farm Coffee from Southeast Asia.” I think they’ve hit the nail on the head.

Portland bills itself as a coffee nirvana of sorts with all kinds of great places to get your caffeine and pastry fix. No doubt this moniker rings true as I’m continually impressed with all of our java-based options here in stumptown (including Stumptown!!). Thus, I wasn’t terribly surprised to find this gem which finds its single location at 2327 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214. That said, I was still firmly impressed and motivated to cover this great spot in the blog. Of course, my impression was driven not only by the decor, but by the menu and tastes I encountered. I had a honey vanilla iced latte that was different than any other and left me set to return. To go alongside, there was only one scone left in the glass case but wow was it wonderful. The staff apologized that there wasn’t more, but noted they get rushed in the morning by a throng of enthusiasts. Get there early! In any case, I was in no way disappointed. My asiago cheese, caramelized onion & rosemary scone, was both sweet and savory and firmly hit the spot. So impressed I asked permission to take pictures and cover the business in this blog.

While I didn’t snap a picture of my excellent, iced latte, I did find an accurate image of this delectable drink on Kopi’s website. Thus, I’m sharing it here. And while little can be gleaned from the chocolate-colored liquid and ice you see here, let me tell you, it’s different and extremely good. Image Courtesy: Kopi Coffee House
