5 Amazing Facts about your Eyes!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As a passionate Portland Optometrist office should be, we LOVE the human eye. It's a fascinating member of our bodies, and one of the most essential. We want to share some amazing facts with you that we know you'll love. Your eyes work so very hard throughout the day, every day. Let's check out how amazing they are..

Did you know...

1. Our eyes are made up of over 200 million working parts.

Even when you're staring intently, your eyes drift about. This makes sure that certain cells which are sensitive to light are constantly being stimulated. If this was to not happen, these cells would not generate output. "Microsaccades" move the eye, all the time, no more than a total of 0.2° degrees in adults! (Mind-boggling)

2. In the right conditions and lighting, humans can see the light of a candle from 14 miles away.

And that's just on earth! On a clear night, you can see the Andromeda galaxy with your naked eye, 2.25 million light years away!!! Imagine the little photons, (Small particles of light), racing through space and eventually landing right in the middle of your eye. Next time it's a clear night, look up and think about that. What you're seeing are actual particles of light that have travelled for years just to be seen by you.

3. The human eye only sees three colors, red, blue and green. All other colors are a combination of these.

It's hard to imagine, but everything we see is just a mix. Televisions even mimic this, mixing these three colors to provide the color you need. If you were to look very close, you can see these individual red, blue and green parts. (Don't strain your eyes) Check out the picture to the right (Found on HowStuffWorks) –––>

4. The eye muscles are the most active muscles in the human body.

Your Eyes' muscles are 100 times stronger than they need to be. Non-stop, day and night, your eyes are constantly working. Even when you sleep, and especially when you dream, your eyes are moving around and working. Even without light. This is called Rapid Eye Movement, or REM sleep.

5. Your eyes contain around 107 million light sensitive cells.

When you're looking at the stars, you're using 107 million Cells. When you're reading the funnies in the paper, you're using 107 million Cells. As you're looking at these facts, you're using hundreds of millions of photosensitive cells! How incredible is that!?

Love your eyes, because they love you!
