The Gem of Ahle's Point Cabin
McMenamin’s is well known for its unique, oft quirky establishments that take advantage of native construction. Schools, supply depots, even funeral parlors have been transformed into very successful eateries. Now and again, McMenamin’s also builds anew and when this opportunity arises, wow do they nail it. Such is the case with the McMenamin’s Kalama Harbor Lodge, a hotel restaurant combo that graces the banks of the Columbia River about 30 miles north of Portland in the city of Kalama, Wa. However, while the larger hotel and restaurant are very cool and will be seen as the main attraction, it’s the little log cabin about 1/4 mile away, down the park path, that is the real gem. Yes, Ahle’s Point Cabin is the place and, well, it just doesn’t get any more quaint or cool than this.
The menu at Ahle’s Point Cabin is pretty limited, with most of the focus set on imbibing. Yet one can order pizza and other food items to keep the beers in check. That said, what a place to sip a hand-crafted beer on the banks of a beautiful river. It is truly stunning here…and un-crowded. In fact, each time we’ve headed up this way there are several open tables at Ahle’s Point…it just hasn’t been fully discovered yet. Plus, it’s a bit outside the city, so that never hurts on keeping things a bit more exclusive.
Under construction on the McMenamin’s hotel property is a new amphitheater. Keeping with the spirit of so many McMenamin’s location, which heavily index on live music, I can just imagine how great it’ll be to catch a live show at this stunning location. Blue water, a beach, hotel and even a playground. This new McMenamin’s location appears to have it all. Do be prepared for a wait at the main hotel restaurant however…that spot has indeed been found out as it’s almost always packed. But if you can make a half day of it…and come up not in a hurry, then you’ll be just fine. Alternatively, if you need to slip in somewhere faster…then Ahle’s Point Cabin is your spot. The cabin is 21 and over however, so any little ones will need an alternative plan. Pets are allowed however, at the outside table. Enjoy!
